FUF, UIN Online – The Professor of Ushuluddin Faculty Prof Dr Said Agil Husein al-Munawar said that not everyone can interpret the Qur’an as Qur’anic interpretations entail adequate scientific capacity.  “Only those who acquire enlightenment, knowledge, and a high level of faith can do so.” Said Said in the seminar “Problematika Tafsir al-Qur’an” held by BEM (Student Executive Board) of Tafsir and Hadith Department in Theater Room of Ushuluddin Faculty, Tuesday (29/12).

Former Minister of Religious Affairs is concerned with the growing number of “street“ interpretations which are not intended to uphold the truth. In fact they are aimed at damaging the belief (aqidah), doubting the truth and misleading the community (ummah). He urged people not to interpret the Qur’an as they like

According to Said, ta’wil or correct interpretation is the interpretation that is carried out in accordance with the meaning and not deviate from it. Thus, expert of Qur’an noted that the interpretation which is widely unaccepted is the interpretation that use interpretation of al-Iysani (sufi, nadori or amali) that are not based on the text, but on Ashbabul Shuluk or riadhoh which gives information through a hunch and dream.

Therefore he urged that to interpret the Qur’an one should have the right intention, be competent and be concerned with maudu’i methods that lead directly to the purpose of interpretation. “We need to seriously examine, and criticize various forms of interpretations, especially in the interpretation having the characteristics of   Ahwana which is only concerned in mental satisfaction, or simply based on lust, temper and bad intentions, which are far from Allah’s ridho,” said he.
